This exciting 3-day trip takes you deep into Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Home to over 1,000 chimpanzees, it’s the perfect spot for close encounters with these playful primates. You’ll trek shaded trails, spot colorful birds, and maybe even cross swinging bridges high above the canopy.
Your journey begins with a morning pickup from Kigali Airport or hotel around 7 AM. Relax on the scenic 4-hour drive south through rolling hills and tea plantations to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Arrive by early afternoon, check into the welcoming Lodge, perched on a hill with stunning forest views. Spend the afternoon easing in—take a short guided walk around the lodge grounds or visit nearby viewpoints.

Rise early for your big adventure! After breakfast, meet your expert guide at the park headquarters for the chimpanzee trekking permit briefing. Trek into the forest (1-4 hours, depending on chimp location), tracking habituated groups as they whoop and climb. Get within 7 meters for amazing photos and observations—these social animals put on quite a show. Return for lunch, then choose the optional canopy walk: stroll 160 meters across seven suspension bridges, 50 meters above the treetops, for bird’s-eye views of monkeys and orchids. unwind with dinner and stories from your guide.
