Mountain Gorilla Behaviour
Why Do Gorillas Beat Their Chests?
Gorilla chest beating is one of the most recognizable behaviors in the primate world. It can communicate size, presence, confidence and social information—and it is not simply a sign that a gorilla is about to attack.
7 Reasons Gorillas Beat Their Chests
1. To Communicate Body Size
A 2021 study of wild adult male mountain gorillas found that larger males produced chest beats with lower peak frequencies. This means the sound can give other gorillas useful information about the size—and potentially competitive ability—of the individual producing it.
2. To Communicate With Rivals
A silverback does not need to physically fight every rival. A powerful display can communicate presence and strength from a distance, helping gorillas assess one another before a confrontation escalates.
3. During Intergroup Encounters
Chest beating can become more frequent when gorilla groups encounter one another. In dense forest, sound is especially useful because vegetation may prevent gorillas from seeing one another clearly.
4. In Reproductive Competition
Researchers have linked chest beating to male–male competition and mate choice. The display can therefore carry information relevant to both competing males and females.
5. To Announce Presence
The drumming sound travels through forest habitat much farther than a visual display. Scientific observations report that chest beats can be heard over long distances, making them useful for communication in thick vegetation.
6. As Part of a Larger Display
Chest beating can occur with other display behaviors. The chest beat itself is a non-vocal sound made by rapidly striking the chest, but hooting or growling may occur around the display.
7. During Play and Development
Chest beating is not limited to dominant silverbacks. Young gorillas can perform the behavior during play, allowing them to practice a display that becomes more socially significant as they mature.
How Do Gorillas Make the Chest-Beating Sound?
A gorilla typically rises into an upright posture and rapidly strikes its chest with cupped hands. This produces the famous drumming sound. It is a non-vocal acoustic signal: the main beat is created physically rather than by the voice. Because the display can be both seen and heard, researchers describe it as multimodal communication.
The sound is more informative than it may seem. Research published in Scientific Reports found a relationship between male body size and chest-beat frequency: larger males tended to produce lower-frequency beats. The study did not find the same consistent body-size relationship for beat duration, number of beats or beat rate.
Does Chest Beating Mean a Gorilla Is Angry?
Not automatically. Chest beating is better understood as communication than as a simple “anger signal.” Context matters. A silverback may display during competition, an encounter with another group or another socially important situation. Young gorillas may also chest beat during play.
For safari visitors, the important point is not to interpret a display using human emotions. Follow the ranger’s instructions, remain calm, avoid sudden movements and respect the required distance and gorilla trekking rules.
Do Female Gorillas Beat Their Chests?
Chest beating is most strongly associated with adult males, especially silverbacks, but the behavior is not exclusive to them. Other gorillas, including younger animals, may perform chest-beating displays. The frequency, context and social meaning can differ by age and sex.
Why Do Baby and Young Gorillas Beat Their Chests?
Young gorillas are highly playful. They chase, wrestle, climb and imitate behaviors seen in older animals. Chest beating can form part of this social play. Research literature on gorilla displays notes that infants can begin producing chest beats at a young age. For a visitor, seeing a juvenile experiment with an adult-like display can be one of the most memorable moments of a trek.
That does not mean every trek will include chest beating. Gorilla encounters are unscripted wildlife experiences. The family may be feeding, resting, moving, grooming or playing during the permitted observation period.
What Should You Do If a Gorilla Beats Its Chest During a Trek?
Stay composed and follow your Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger or guide. Do not run, shout, imitate the chest beat or deliberately provoke a reaction. Gorilla trekking is managed around established viewing rules intended to protect both visitors and gorillas. Your ranger will interpret the situation and tell the group how to behave.
Uganda Wildlife Authority states that gorilla trekking is available in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, with a standard trek providing approximately one hour with a habituated gorilla family after the group is located.
Where Can You Observe Mountain Gorilla Behaviour in Uganda?
Uganda’s two principal mountain gorilla trekking destinations are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi offers several trekking sectors, while Mgahinga provides a compact Virunga setting that can also be combined with golden monkey tracking and volcanic scenery.
For travelers deciding between the two, see PrideMark Safaris’ Bwindi vs Mgahinga gorilla trekking guide. You can also combine gorillas with savannah wildlife on the 5-Day Uganda Gorilla & Game Safari.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do silverback gorillas beat their chests?
Silverbacks use chest beating as a communication display. Research indicates it can communicate body size and is relevant to competition between males and mate choice.
Is gorilla chest beating always aggressive?
No. Context matters. Chest beating occurs in competitive situations but can also be performed by younger gorillas during play.
How do gorillas make the chest-beating sound?
They rapidly strike the chest with cupped hands, creating a non-vocal drumming sound.
Can tourists see gorillas chest beating?
It is possible, but never guaranteed. Wild gorilla behavior varies from one encounter to another.
Where can I trek mountain gorillas in Uganda?
Uganda offers mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
